New Zealand Recruitment Campaign
Jono Brand, Amanda McGregor, Emily Owen, Amy Blomberg, Ryan Moore & Alannah Jeffcoat
To overcome recruitment challenges and uphold our RAP commitments, this team launched a bold and innovative Captain Starlight talent search in New Zealand. This cross-Tasman campaign brought fresh energy, international talent, and strong DEI impact, proving that exceptional Captains can come from anywhere. By leaping into the unknown, they found new ways to shine – together.
How to Maximise the Get Connected Experience
Jason Judge, Sam Urquijo Garcia, Mitchell Holland, Cam Whitten, Nicole Harvey, Lara Deam & Jimmy Eaton
Having uncovered the insight that feeling useful and like they 'know what they're doing' during a Get Connected is really important to Starlighters, this team put in place a range of creative solutions to really maximise the Get Connected Experience! This was a case study in getting into their customers shoes to really create change that adds value.

LinkedIn and Tik Tok
Jacki James and Alannah Jeffcoat
Jacki and Alannah spotted a the changing focus of LinkedIn away from being simply a recruitment resource, and noted the increasing impact of Tik Tok. They put in place a strategy built on having a great understanding of Starlight's audience across these platforms which saw a significant increase in growth and impact!
Health & Wellbeing @ Starlight
Melissa Barker, Alistair Magee, Ashlee Gunstone, Rachel Wald & Susan Henry
By meaningfully expanding Starlight's evidence-based, proactive approach to mental health and well-being, this team did a fantastic job at understanding their customers (their fellow Starlighters!) needs by thinking in their shoes every step of the way! The result is a Mental Health and Wellbeing approach that gives all Starlighters meaningful support.

Stories told by Kids
Lauren Harvey a.k.a. Captain Kerfuffle
Creating content which would have the biggest impact – heavily researched what kids were watching, doing on TikTok and found videos being dubbed with voice and Stories by Kids grew! Created a great solution when Programs couldn’t be on wards / in SERs during crazy time.
Longform Livestreams & Multiplayer Games
Lori Dwyer & Conor Lehman with support from RCH & JHCH Teams
Livewire livestreams are strong in terms of linkages back to innovation techniques. Innovation is always needed to stay relevant in teenager land! Delivery content which is up to date with current trends and youth culture.
Listened to members and tapped into interests outside of Livewire. Introduced longstream (as long as 2 hours) and multiplayer games – members could not only watch but interact too!
Delivered loads of positive distraction and FUN! Social connection among Livewire online community has increased and member engagement has also increased.

Livewire Academy Virtual Reality
Amy Blomberg, Hannah Lynch Bosse, Jeremy Neale & Jono Kirkham
A game-changing innovation that evolved the way Starlight delivered training for the national Livewire team (and subsequently the Captains team). By creating a 360 degree Virtual Reality (VR) training module, team members could now focus on experience what hospital and Livewire is like from a teenagers perspective in their hospital room.
Event Ticketing Portal
Evangeline Leung, Henry Wong, Jacki James, Matt Geraghty, Skye Deards & Wai Chim
This innovation created a WOW user experience for donors, by including online payments for invoices, not just for tickets for Starlight events. By working smarter, there was a significant saving in time and resources for many team members across the organisation.

National Team Meeting
Kathleen Gray, Luke Mansfield, Olivia Longson, Sarah Rouse
We #Shinebrightertogther at Starlight, and when COVID-19 prevented us meeting in each State and Territory in person, we quickly pivoted to a monthly, online National team meeting. These ongoing meetings provide an opportunity to bring all team members together, highlight achievements across the organisation and give team members the opportunity to present to their peers.
Fun with Captain Starlight Live Streaming
Jimmy Eaton, Kathryn Tohill, Laura Martin & Sophia Haworth
COVID-19 restrictions across Australia left Starlight families more isolated than ever before. With families spending more time at home, there was a clear opportunity for Captain Starlight to provide positive distraction beyond the hospital walls. Using Starlight's Facebook page to Livestream directly to families own devices was a successful innovation that emerged from this opportunity!

Fun with Captain Starlight, Bounce Patrol Collaboration
Cam Whitten, Crystal Hegedis, Imogen Aitken, Jimmy Eaton, Kathryn Tohill, Laura Martin & Rychelle Spittle
Fun with Captain Starlight is all about reaching kids wherever they are, when they can’t experience the magic of Captain Starlight in person. The Hub team collaborated with Bounce Patrol (who have over 20 million subscribers on YouTube!), via an interactive livestream, where kids could engage via Facebook messages, to go on a 'treasure hunt' and help Captain Starlight find the 'best place to bounce'. The team also created a shared playlist with Bounce Patrol on our Starlight YouTube channel that was a huge success!
